Neo-Assyrian Empire

Neo-Assyrian Empire
A term sometimes used by modern scholars to denote the third and last major phase of ancient Assyrian civilization, beginning in the mid-900s b.c. and ending with the fall of the last Assyrian royal stronghold, Harran, in about 610 b.c. During this period the Assyrian Empire reached its greatest extent under the Sargonids, consisting of Sargon II and his illustrious successors, Sennacherib, Esar-haddon, and Ashurbanipal. For an overview of the major figures and events of the period, see also Assyrian Empire.
